Energy Saving Winter Tips

Dry Air Remedy

If your house is heated with forced air floor vents, the air in the house tends to get very dry during winter which can cause eye, nose, and skin irritations. To add moisture to the air, place old bundt cake pans filled with water on top of the vents.

If you don't have any old bundt pans, look for them in the Mountains Thrift Shop in Blue Jay or at garage sales.

Better Heating Efficiency

For more efficient heating, cut cardboard to the width of the vents, cover with aluminum foil and tape to the wall behind the vents; this will reflect heat into the room. (On the picture, it looks like there is aluminum foil in the pan too, but that's just a reflection.)

Paper Logs

You can supplement your firewood with "paper logs." To make them, save the cardboard rolls from inside of bathroom tissue and gift wrap. Cut the rolls in approximately 1 inch rings. Roll up newspapers and used printer paper tightly and fit into the cardboard rings. These paper logs are best used mixed in with wood logs, rather than by themselves.
