MOUNTAINS GROUP

San Gorgonio Chapter

 Bill Engs

Treasurer & Outings

I joined Sierra Club in 1958. In the 1960's I served on the San Francisco Bay Chapter ExCom, was treasurer, and produced an excom procedures manual. I began leading outings and was elected chair of the Rock Climbing Section. At that time I was on the Sierra Club Mountaineering Committee as Mountain Records Chair. When I moved to

Oregon, I served as Vice Chair of the Eugene Group. There I developed a system for getting advance information on USFS timber sale plans.

In the 1970's I was president of the San Juan Ecological Society, Durango, CO. Then I moved to Southern California and led outings for hikes, backpacks, peak climbs and bird walks for the San Gorgonio Chapter. I served as an instructor with the chapter's Basic Mountaineering Course.

I planned and led 17 Sierra Club National (backpack) Outings in the High Sierra

I’m a member of the Mountains Group ExCom and have been Outings Chair since 1995. I’m Group Treasurer and responsible for disbursing money in the Group's Sierra Club Foundation account to support environmental causes in the west San Bernardino Mountains.

Currently I lead Group hikes, bird walks, car camps and trail maintenance parties. I’m an instructor with the chapter's Outing Leader Training Course.  Recently I’ve led car camps and backpacks for the Desert Committee, California-Nevada Regional Conservation Committee.
