WHITEHEADED WOODPECKER

This woodpecker has made its home in an old tree stump.

The picture was taken at the Angeles Chapter 2005 Nature Knowledge Workshop at the Santa Ana River near Barton Flats. The red spot on the back of the head shows that this is an adult male.

The whiteheaded woodpecker is on the Audubon watchlist. It is intolerant of humans near their nest and is threatened with habitat destruction by modern forestry practices. See the Audubon link below for more details.
